8th Annual Outer Banks Wedding Expo
First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills. The Expo is
the oldest and largest wedding planning event on the Outer
Banks and is attended by over 700 brides and their families
from across the country. The Expo is the centerpiece of
a weekend full of activities for future Outer Banks brides.
A welcome reception is scheduled for Saturday, January 7,
at the Comfort Inn South in Nags Head. The Association is
planning a fashion show on Sunday at the Expo. OBWA will
also draw a winner of the Outer Banks Dream Wedding Grand
Prize, a package of wedding-related services and goods donated
by members of the Association. Nearly 100 Outer Banks wedding
businesses are expected to exhibit at the Expo, which is
open only to Outer Banks Wedding Association members. For

first annual Outer Banks Wedding Show to be held Sunday
January 15, 2005, 11am to 3pm at First Flight High School

28th Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show
On display at the Ghost Fleet Gallery in Nags Head through
February. Includes a wide variety of local fine art ranging
from conceptual to realistic. Sculpture, painting, drawing,
fiber, pottery and mixed media. The show is the longest
running visual art exhibition in the county. Stick gained
recognition as an illustrator for magazines such as Collier's,
Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal and Outdoor America
during the early part of the 20th century. He is most known
for painting hundreds of hunting and fishing scenes to illustrate
outdoor and adventure stories. In addition to his contribution
to the art world, Stick was a man of vision. After visiting
the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the 1920s on a surf-fishing
trip, he became enamored with the region and its potential
as a tourist destination. It was largely through Stick's
efforts, that the Cape Hatteras National Seashore was established
as America's first national seashore. Open to members and

Ninth Annual Priceless Pieces Past & Present Quilt Extravaganza
The annual event is organized
by the local Teacup Quilters. The popular show features
old and new quilts made by, or belonging to, the people
of the region. Many of the quilts and their stories
are an important part of our Dare County history and heritage.
And each year, I am amazed at the beautiful quilts that
we are so generously allowed to display by their owners,
says Teacup Quilter Annette Ratzenberger. An opening reception
will be held on Sunday, March 5 from 2-4 p.m. The local
gospel-singing group, Echoes of Heritage, will perform.
Various quilt-related demonstrations and activities are
scheduled throughout the month. A Quilt Trunk Show will
be presented on March 11th at 1:00 p.m.A quilting supply

for the "We Build People" scholarship fund that

Tom Francesconi, NWS Watercolor Workshop
Dare County Arts Council and Roanoke Island Festival Park
formed a unique partnership to offer art workshops by well-known
artists in April and October each year. These workshops
are set up to encourage creativity among students in the
midst of unique history, environment and culture of the
Outer Banks. Classes are for beginners, intermediate and
advanced artists. Through daily discussions and demonstrations,
Tom will share his experience and knowledge on such topics
as subject matter, concept, planning a painting, design,
design elements and their application along with color and
its usage. Enrollment is limited to 20 students. Total tuition
is $425. Housing is available at the Roanoke Island Festival
Park housing facility in Manteo for a nominal fee. Tom's
paintings have achieved prominence through acceptance and
Awards in major national exhibitions. He has earned signature
membership in the National Watercolor Society, the Transparent
Watercolor Society of America and Northwest Watercolor Society,

9th Annual Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show
Features an eclectic mix of local art. On display at the
Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park. Held in memory
of Mollie Fearing, one of the founders of the root organization
from which DCAC arose. In 1975 a group of Dare county residents
met at the home of Mollie Fearing where they set about founding
an organization that would introduce thousands of school
children and adults to music, dance, theatre, painting,
sculpture, poetry and literature. The organization would
initially be called the Sea and Sounds Arts Council and
later, the Dare County Arts Council. Mollie Fearing was
elected president of the Arts Council in 1975 and was a
vital supporter and advocate of the arts until the time
of her death on September 3, 1997. Mollie's contributions
to the community were numerous, from serving as mayor for
the Town of Manteo, to serving on the board of the Roanoke
Island Historical Association, to her dedication to the
arts. Mollie's legacy in our community remains strong to

their work during the SilverArts portion of the Outer Banks
Senior Games, which takes place in April 2006 at the KDH

Arts. Heritage Arts includes woodcarving, stained glass,

The Lost Colony Outdoor Symphonic Drama

The Optimist dinghy is a single-handed pram designed to
be sailed by sailors age 8 to 15 and under 115 pounds. This

no prior experience, but should be confident swimmers. The
sailor will learn basic boat handling skills, the parts
of the boat, rules of the road, and basic sailing theory.
The five -day program provides plenty of on the water time
for each sailor to become with the feel of the boat and
wind. Beginning sailors age 8 9 may sail double handed

The prerequisite for the Opti Racer class is successful
completion of the Optimist Program. In the Opti Racer program,
students are introduced to racing rules and tactics, with
a focus on starts, mark rounding and finish strategies.
Students will participate in a local regatta at the end

be available to students. This will require travel and parental
involvement in transportation and supervision of racers

The Lost Colony Outdoor Symphonic Drama
Monday - Saturday at 8:30pm at the Waterside Theatre, Fort
Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island. The Lost
Colony - theatre under the stars - America's first and longest
running outdoor symphonic drama written by Pulitzer Prize-winning
author Paul Green, tells the legacy of the 117 colonists
- men, women and children that struggled together to make
their home in the New World and then vanished without a
trace. Though they were lost, their dream still lives. Their
story is told through the music, dance and dramatic spectacle
of The Lost Colony.
Bring the entire family and
experience the story of the first of many dreamers who traveled
across the seas, yearning for a new freedom, risking everything
in the greatest struggle of their lives. Witness the conflict
come alive as you see the struggle between the natives and
the colonists. See the celebration surround you with the
colonist dancing and rejoicing over the birth of the first
English child born in the New World. All told in a lavish
production, designed by four-time Tony award-winning William
Ivey Long.

Junior Sailing Optimist Program
8 a.m. to noon. NC Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island
The Optimist dinghy is a single-handed pram designed to
be sailed by sailors age 8 to 15 and under 115 pounds. This
is where a majority of young sailors begin. Sailors need
no prior experience, but should be confident swimmers. The
sailor will learn basic boat handling skills, the parts
of the boat, rules of the road, and basic sailing theory.
The five -day program provides plenty of on the water time
for each sailor to become with the feel of the boat and
wind. Beginning sailors age 8 9 may sail double handed
in this program. The fee is $160.00 for Maritime Museum
members or $190.00 for non-members. For more information

Day at the Docks
Hatteras Island is gearing up for Day at the Docks - A Celebration
of Hatteras Island Watermen. The celebration will run from
10 AM to 5 PM along the harbor in Hatteras Village. Historic
boats representing several of North Carolina's oldest fisheries
will line the site of the celebration. In addition to shad
boats, beach dories, and mullet skiffs, modern commercial
fishing vessels and charter boats will be on display, and
guests can tour the United States Coast Guard's 47' motor
lifeboat. Commercial fishermen and charter-boat captains
will share stories describing what it's like to make a living
from the sea. Watermen will also demonstrate how they use
different types of fishing gear, and will compete in contests
measuring their speed in the skills they use every day.
Seafood experts will teach the best way to fillet fish and
pick crabs, and how to prepare traditional island dishes.
Children and their parents are invited to join in on the
fun, including a fish identification game, hard crab races,
and a scavenger hunt. There is no admission fee for Day
